About Us

In 2000, (A)OPTA was formed to assist those in the BAME community struggling with addiction and mental health. We started this initiative because we found that many minority communities had little access to main stream addiction and mental health services in the community and there was a shame in accessing them. We know there is a stigma associated with mental health and addiction, and it can be hard knowing who to ask for help.

Low income, peer problems, educational pressure and religious commitment can contribute to the pressures that people find themselves under and this can have an affect on mental health. GP may not have enough time to properly assess what is actually needed. At (A)OPTA we know many BAME women will tell their GP’s they have problems sleeping and they are over prescribed prescription medications which is highly addictive to help them. In the short term this is helpful but it doesn’t address the underlying causes for the lack of sleep such as, money worries, worries about a child or teenager, or worries about extended family members and/or diagnosed illnesses.

Since 2000, we have been involved in a number of public sector and private sector programmes, but our aim has always been to provide effective evidence interventions for those in BAME communities.
